The mission of Kansas Parents as Teachers (KPATA) is to promote the optimal early development, learning and health of children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers.
Now KPATA’s parent educators have expanded their parenting tool kit with a new way to help parents build a positive relationship with their children in safe, stable and nurturing ways. Called "Behavior Checker"®, this evidence-based, online tool helps adults respond in healthy ways to more than 150 of children’s common, everyday behaviors, such as sleeping issues, biting, tantrums, and separation anxiety. It’s accessible 24/7/365 for simple, trusted teaching strategies that lower everyone's stress.
“We are proud to partner with Behavior Checker to help parents have the tools and confidence they need to parent with a positive Mind S.E.T.®,"said Michelle Kelly, KPATA Past President. “We love that Behavior Checker provides access to immediate advice to handle overwhelming behaviors. While having this information is crucial, we know that implementing it can be hard.”
Behavior Checker is only one of many tools and resources that KPATA Parent Educators can provide. If you have a child in your home under kindergarten entry age, there may be a free program in your area that we can help connect you with. Home visiting includes developmental activities to share with your child, developmental, hearing, vision and health screenings, group connections and the support to find resources that meet the needs and goals of your family.
Behavior Checker was developed by the Raised with Love and Limits Foundation. Their mission is to support the new public health movement of preventing toxic stress in children’s lives to improve their health, learning and behavior by helping parents and caregivers manage children’s common behavioral issues through evidence-based strategies that develop safe, stable and nurturing relationships with children.
According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, “The #1 way to reduce the risk of lifelong mental, physical and behavioral health problems, such as bullying, depression, anxiety, abuse, drug addiction, obesity, heart disease, suicide, cancer and more, is a safe, stable and nurturing adult-child relationship.”
